Purposes and Functions of the Warsaw Pact
This was a pact of communist countries. This pact is basically like NATO. They made everyone say that they would protect each other and fight for their fellow countries in the pact. While NATO mainly focused on the economy, the Soviet Union focused on getting more power and keeping it. The Soviet Union placed military personnel in each country to make sure they were running a socialist government and to reassure the Soviet's hold on the country. By the end of the Cold War, the Soviet Union had spent three times what the U.S. was with only a third of economic power.
