Nikita Khrushchev
He became the new Soviet leader after Stalin died. In 1956 he publicly denounced Stalin's abuse of power, which means he publicly told people how bad it was. He wanted to put a thaw in the Cold War so he didn't change Soviet goals but did set free many political prisoners and eased censorship. In 1956, Hungarians revolted against communist rule so Khrushchev sent tanks to smash them. However, when people at home grew too bold with their dislikes, he started to keep a tighter reign on it and it appeared that a return to Stalinism could happen any time.
Khrushchev set up the Warsaw Pact in 1955 to defend the communist bloc against NATO. He tried to build nuclear missile bases in Cuba but that triggered the Cuban missile crisis which brought them to the brink of war.
